Difference between the Master page and page layout in SharePoint

Master Pages contain controls that are shared across multiple page layouts, such as navigation, search, or language-preference for multilingual sites. Page layouts contain field controls and Web Parts.

The master page is what defines the design of your site. It applies for all pages within that site,

Each page layout is bound to one content type. The page layouts are stored in the Master Page Gallery. You can create page layouts for existing content types, or you can create a new content type.

Master page defines how your site looks like, the page layouts define how your pages look like.

Page layouts can be used by all page instances that are based on that page layout. Master pages can be used by all page instances in a site. Page instances that are based on the same page layout in different sites can use different master pages.
